Imagined Moments
Is it possible for a photographer to capture images of dancers without recording the dances themselves? Lois Greenfield would answer that question with an emphatic “Yes!”, and the evidence may be found in this exhibition in great abundance. Preferring to work with dancers on improvised, non-repeatable, often high-risk movements, Greenfield’s images yield unique experiences not as excerpts of theatrical choreography, but as individually Imagined Moments.
– Norton Owen, Curator
Included in this exhibition are; Euclid’s Dream – a plexiglass cube installation that emphasizes Greenfield’s spontaneous and dreamlike vision, and Resonant Intervals – a 64-panel composition of calligraphic images of dancers. In addition, a slide presentation of Lois’ early work from 70’s will be showing along with her commentary.

Art in the Foyer
The National Museum of Dance exhibits the works of selected artists in their elegant foyer. They have selected Lois’ “Celestial Bodies/Infernal Souls” for their 2010-2011 installation.
Celestial Bodies/Infernal Souls incorporates her most recent work in color with her classic black and white images. This series sets the lithe and graceful form of the dancers in an unexpected narrative – both angelic & demonic. For Art in the Foyer, Lois has selected images from her collection that especially celebrate the multiplicity of dance styles.

Celestial Bodies/Infernal Souls
“Celestial Bodies/Infernal Souls” is Lois Greenfield’s newest collection of 54 photographs . Incorporating her most recent work in color with her classic black and white images, this series sets the lithe and graceful form of the dancers in an unexpected narrative. The dancers, as seen through Lois’ lens, seem to take on angelic or demonic identity, either flying through the heavens or plunged into the underworld. These poetic figures reveal themselves as creatures playing out a mythic and eternal drama. Link to view the online gallery

Resonating Fields
The Photography of Lois Greenfield
This new presentation of Lois Greenfield’s work brings a fresh perspective and conceptualization developed by Canadian Media Artist Henry Jesionka.
For this exhibition Jesionka has re-visionned Greenfield’s work into “galleries” that move beyond any one single image or instantaneous moment. These galleries become a resonant field of forms and figures, rhymes and configurations with sections and movements intended to form shifting structures of concept and design. Within each series are orchestrated changes of scale, placement in sequence and configuration to create dynamic and very “musical” forms. more…

Australian Dance Theater's HELD
Embodying the dynamic tension between the action of Garry Stewart’s ballistic choreography and its “fixed” capture by photographer Lois Greenfield, HELD juxtaposes solidity with liquidity, heaviness with lightness, stillness with flow, clarity with illusion in an extraordinary live performance. more…
